April 16 in history. Nikita vodopol, waterman's treat

Have you ever celebrated Ape-to-Man Day? Today, April 16, you can think about the process of turning a monkey into a human

Monkey to Man Day

Do you know why monkeys don't turn into humans now? But this is a very pressing issue today for those people who are opponents of Darwinism. Some scientists believe that the process of transformation of a monkey into a human is long and ranges from 3 to 5 million years. I wonder how quickly the reverse process takes place?

Charlie Chaplin Day

A touching actor, a man of small stature, with an amazingly big soul, he forever left a memory in the soul of every viewer. We are, of course, talking about the great actor Charlie Chaplin, whose day is celebrated on April 16 by the public all over the world. The brilliant silent film actor was born in London on April 16, 1889. The image of a touching tramp, a man with a black mustache, a large bowler hat and an invariable cane, still evokes delight. We still watch his simple films with a simple plot, which were released in the last century, without taking our eyes off them, thanks to the amazing performance of the actor, who has never spoken from the screen in almost his entire acting career.

Cinnamon Wind Day

And the wind will open the window and blow in the warmth,
a mestizo wind that happened on all coasts,
the time will come for backpacks and breaking fillings
on the shutters leading south, and stories of the past,
the creaking of rusty master keys in barn locks,
and the smell, the tart smell of the dark wind,
which got stuck in our sneakers, pants, backpacks
(in their dark, surprise-filled, mysterious depths).
Miracles will begin to happen as if by themselves,
and good thoughts will come like a boss,
when we dig out the paper bag of cinnamon
in the pocket - spice brought from distant lands.

NIKITA VODOPOL, VODYANY'S TREAT
The day of April 16 was popularly called the day of Nikita Vodopol or the Water Treat in honor of the Confessor, the abbot of the monastery of Midice Nikita, who lived in the 8-9 centuries. The rapid melting of snow began with the Nikita holiday. On this day, ice floes are rushing along the river with might and main, and if the river overflows its banks, then the flood can bring a lot of trouble - the river will sweep away everything that is in the way. At this time, it was very important for the peasants to understand in advance how much the water would spill. People often determined the height of a flood by the height of a sandpiper bird's nest or by the burrows of moles, because they never dig below the flood level.

On this day, our ancestors believed that the merman was waking up from hibernation, so they tried to appease him with all sorts of treats - some with porridge, some with bread, and some with chicken giblets. If the merman did not eat this food, then the peasants said that in the spring it would be useful to the creatures that live in the depths of the river. On this day, fishermen especially tried to appease the merman; they asked for good luck in fishing by pouring oil into the river. The most superstitious peasants considered it to be the worst omen if the water man did not accept the gift.

Constitution Day in Bulgaria

The national holiday is dedicated to the adoption on April 16, 1879 of the first Bulgarian Constitution, which was drawn up on the basis of a Belgian legal act. According to its content, Bulgaria officially accepted the status of a constitutional monarchy, and also had legislative and parliamentary powers. Over time, in socialist Bulgaria, amendments to the document replaced each other with regular intervals. Since 1947, the “Dimitrov” Constitution has been in force in the republic, since 1971 – the “Zhivkov” Constitution, and at the moment the Constitution adopted in 1991 is in force in Bulgaria.

Today Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic. Its parliament includes more than two hundred deputies elected by the people. According to the new legal act, the head of Bulgaria is the president (his elections are held every five years), and government is divided into three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. This day is an official holiday in the republic. It should be noted that on April 16, Bulgaria also celebrates Lawyer’s Day.

Police Day in Armenia

Every year on April 16, police officers in Armenia celebrate their professional holiday, approved by the authorities in 2001. In June 2006, the Law “On Police” of Armenia underwent several changes. According to the amendments, the police were assigned the following tasks:

2) ensuring the safety of the population;
3) protection of public order;
4) conducting a preliminary investigation;
5) solving crimes;
6) protection of any forms of property;
7) protection of human rights and freedoms.

The main duty of police officers of any state is to protect the health, life, dignity, and legitimate interests of its citizens from criminal attacks. In the morning hours of April 16, many Armenian police officers consider it a sacred duty to lay flowers at the monument to the Unknown Soldier, rising in Yerevan in Victory Park. The best employees today are awarded with certificates and other honorary awards.

April 16 in the folk calendar

Treat for the merman, Nikita Vodopol

On April 16, the people honor the memory of Saint Nikita the Confessor, the abbot of the Medicia monastery, who lived at the turn of the 8th-9th centuries.

In Rus', they noticed that from Nikita the last snows began to melt especially intensively, and “crazy” ice floes were already rushing along the rivers with might and main. Floods caused a lot of inconvenience to the peasants. And if the river completely “diverges”, then everything that is in its vicinity will certainly be swept away on its way. According to legend, on April 16, the last merpeople are released from hibernation. To avoid large spills, people tried to appease him with various treats. Some treated them with bread, others with porridge, vegetables or milk. Vegetable oil was also added to the water. And the bravest ones sacrificed to him an old, unfit horse, which they fattened the day before the sacrifice, combed it and tied a large beautiful ribbon to its mane. The fishermen especially tried to please the waterman so that he would not skimp on his catch. However, if the old man refused gifts, it means that the year will not be very successful in terms of fishing.

Signs April 16 - day of Nikita Vodopol, Graphia

They said that it was on Nikita that Vodyanoy woke up. Moreover, he was in a very bad mood.

Therefore, on April 16, the peasants brought him tribute at midnight and asked him not to frighten good people and, especially children, do not drive fish out of rivers and ponds.

People called April 16 nothing more than the Water Treat, Nikitin's Day, Vodopol, Nikita the Icebreaker, Agafya the Icebreaker. All this was connected with the flooding of the rivers and the awakening of Vodyanoy. From hunger and frustration, this spirit tortured small fish to death and crushed the ice, and therefore, they tried to appease it.

It was believed that the spirit was waiting for gifts from people for three days, and during this time it was possible to appease it, otherwise the Vodyanoy would destroy the fish and go to other bodies of water. However, fishermen usually tried to prevent this and on April 16 they performed rituals that were believed to help appease the spirit. For example, they could, without haggling, buy the worst and oldest horse together.

For the remaining period of time, she was fattened, and on the last evening she was smeared with salt and honey, red ribbons were woven into her mane, her legs were tied with ropes and old millstones were attached to her neck. Then at midnight they went to the river, and... if the ice had not yet melted that night, then they lowered the horse into the hole.

If the river was clean, then the animal was simply pushed to the middle of the reservoir. One of the fishermen at this time listened to the water and gave signs when the horse could be drowned - this was announced by a dull sound or groan, and the water began to splash.

After the horse drowned, the fisherman poured oil into the river and told the merman to eat well, after which he would not cause trouble to the people. Vodyany could also be treated to millet porridge, a crust of bread, and chicken giblets. Next, the fishermen once again treated the Vodyanoy if they were unable to take part in the night ritual.

On April 16, they threw bread crumbs, fish from the first catch, a pinch of tobacco, and the remains of wine into the water. When they realized that Vodyanoy had calmed down, they could go fishing. But great grief awaited people if Vodyanoy did not accept the treat and left the reservoir - it was believed that then they would no longer have to wait for a good catch.

The signing took place during the Genoa Conference in the Italian city of Rapallo. The document was signed by People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs of the RSFSR Georgy Chicherin and German Foreign Minister Walter Rathenau.

The Treaty of Rapallo provided for immediate restoration diplomatic relations between the two countries, and in addition, the parties waived claims for compensation for military expenses and non-military losses.
