Bot saint gabriel story. Deck boat "Saint Gabriel". To the shores of Japan

This is my fourth model that I worked on from 09/10/2014 to 07/22/2015.
It took me a long time to decide whether or not to buy this model, the manufacturer was confused. But after I started assembling I realized that I was not mistaken. The quality is top notch. All parts fit neatly into place without any play, even with interference. The model was artificially aged, the sails too, I spied on Zhdan. I changed the boat and dowel. Brass Bleck blackened the brass. I bought Gutermann threads and made ropes from them. Standard materials: dark walnut, boxwood, ramin, linden. There was more than enough material.

In my free time I started reading about this boat and was amazed how it was possible to sail there on such a fragile vessel!!! This isn't Hawaii. The Great Northern Expedition (First Kamchatka Expedition of 1728-1729) was organized according to the plans of the Russian Emperor Peter the Great. The expedition consisted of seven independent detachments with a total number of five thousand people. Areas of exploration of the coasts of the Arctic and Pacific oceans were distributed among the detachments; the tasks of the navigators included mapping the coasts of the Russian state.
The expedition was led by Captain-Commander Vitus Bering. In addition, he was supposed to build the Northern Sea Route from Arkhangelsk past the Siberian shores of the Arctic Ocean to Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Japan and America.Thanks to polar explorers, previously unknown peninsulas and islands appeared on the map of Russia: Taimyr, Yamal, Alaska, Aleutian, Komandorsky and many others. For more than ten years, brave sailors mapped the outlines of the country's coast, overcoming all difficulties - in those years, even a chronometer had not yet been invented. It appeared only in 1772. But already in 1746. a complete map of the northern Russian coasts was compiled. To this day, materials from the Great Northern Expedition are used when printing maps of the Arctic.It must be said that the naval officers themselves supervised the construction of the sailing ships on which they went on expeditions. And they gave them euphonious names: “Expedition”, “Ob”, “Tobol”, “Yakutsk”, “Irkutsk”, “Pallas”, “Yasashna”, “Ob Postman” and others. A special place among the most famous Russian ships is occupied by bot "Saint Gabriel". Built in 1728 in Kamchatka, a small (even for those times) ship, faithfully served Russia for 3 decades.“Holy Archangel Gabriel” entered his name not only into the history of geographical and oceanographic discoveries and research, but also made a significant contribution to the development of Russian statehood and politics.
Such famous Russian navigators as V.Y. sailed on the “St. Gabriel” at different times. Bering, A.I. Chirikov, M.P. Shpanberg, P.A. Chaplin, K. Moshkov, J. Gens, I. Fedorov, M.S. Gvozdev, V. Valton, I.F. Elagin and others. I take my hat off to these people.

I plucked up the nerve and decided to apply to participate in the bench model ship competition that took place in the heroic city of Kerch from August 15 to 17, 2015. And what a surprise I was that at the box office for S-8 models, my bot took first place with a total of 93.33 points.

A colorfully designed box made of hard cardboard, visually in no way inferior to those of famous foreign brands, just begs to be picked up. And having taken it, without even having time to look inside, you realize that you will never return it to the shelf. Here it is, the long-awaited continuation of the “Russian sailboats” series, or rather the second model of a domestic vessel, the box of which says “Made in Russia”. What kind of woodenkit does the domestic manufacturer offer us?
A little history:
The boat "St. Gabriel" served in the Pacific Ocean for 27 years, until 1755. In documents of that time, it was called differently: "St. Gabriel", "Gabriel" and even "Gabrila" or "Gabriel". Many discoveries and glorious historical events are associated with them. Such, for example, as the voyage of the first European ship beyond the Arctic Circle in the Chukchi Sea in 1728, the discovery of Alaska in 1732, participation in the survey of the southwestern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Shantar Islands in 1730, participation in the suppression of the Itelmen uprising and the founding of the new Lower Kamchatka fort, the first Russian visit to Japan in 1739, the exploration of Avacha Bay and the founding in 1740 of one of the oldest cities in the Russian Far East - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The stand model Boat St. Gabriel from the Master Ship company is a very interesting wooden ship for self-assembly. The model of the sailing ship is made on a scale of 1:72 from the prototype - the legendary boat of the 1st Kamchatka expedition, Vitus Bering. The vessel's hull has a double skin and a special design that compensates for the deformation of materials. Each sheathing board and all wood pieces are laser cut for precision and ease of assembly. Laser markings are applied to the frames. Dimensions 300x150x350 mm.

Prototype history

Bot "St. Gabriel,” despite its modest size even for the 18th century, is one of the most famous Russian ships. The decree on its construction and on the organization of the 1st Kamchatka expedition was signed by Peter I, but the ship itself was built in 1728 after the death of the emperor. The sailing ship, which was only 18.3 meters long along the keel and 6.1 meters wide along the midship frame, faithfully served Russia for 30 years. During this time, he never caused any surprises to the sailors during sea voyages. The boat was commanded by Vitus Bering, who was one of the most brilliant naval officers of the Empire and before “St. Gabriel" - the commander of the largest combat ship in the Russian fleet at that time, the 90-gun battleship Lesnoye. The boat and the first Russian shipyard in the Pacific Ocean were built by the student Fedor Kozlov’s son, “boat and lifeboat business.” The boat was built in strict accordance with the drawing developed by the St. Petersburg Admiralty based on the best warships.

The architecture of the boat complied with the regulations of that time for ships of this class: three compartments - a cockpit for the crew, a cargo hold, officer's cabins and a crew chamber.

During the 1st Kamchatka expedition, the team “St. Gabriel" made 155 territorial and 18 oceanographic discoveries, and mapped 66 geographical objects. Thus, “St. Gabriel” entered his name not only into the history of geographical discoveries, but also made a significant contribution to the development of Russian statehood and politics. During the 2nd Kamchatka expedition, the team “St. Gabriel" discovered Alaska, developed a gigantic territory in the far east of Asia and the adjacent maritime space, and established trade routes to Japan.

Assembling the ship belongs to the second level of complexity and requires the use of special tools for ship modeling.

To work you will need:

  • model knife with replaceable blades.
  • three types of skins (medium-grained No. 200-240, fine-grained No. 400-600, very fine-grained No. 1000-1200). It is advisable to purchase or make your own wooden skin holders in the form of bars of different shapes on which the skin is attached.
  • set of files:
  • flat, round, square;
  • nailer (nail) for driving small nails
  • notch for bending the rail
  • mini-drill and drills with a diameter of 0.5-6.0 mm;
  • office clips;
  • PVA glue for gluing wooden parts, contact glue “Moment” for gluing deck flooring, cyanoacrylate glue for gluing metal parts.
  • transparent semi-matte varnish and black paint.

In the winter of 1725, dank, cold winds blew over St. Petersburg. They raised snow tornadoes in vacant lots, swept over the frozen swamps of the Swamps, and broke into the doors and windows of houses standing on trellises. The rare pedestrians, driven out into the street by chance or necessity, tried to quickly reach the warmth, hiding their noses and ears in their collars as they went. The city lived with anxious anticipation: in his palace, surrounded by the Preobrazhentsy and Semyonovtsy, lay the seriously ill Tsar Peter. Back in the fall, while rescuing sailors from a sinking ship in icy water, the tsar caught a cold and fell ill. They were waiting for Peter's death. And he, turning over in his mind the things that he had planned but did not accomplish, remembered that he was going to send an expedition to Kamchatka in order to find out whether there was a strait between Asia and America. And Peter writes the command with his own hand:

“1) It is necessary to create one or two boats with decks in Kamchatka or another customs place.

2) On these boats, sail near the land that goes north and, as expected (they don’t know the end of it), it seems that that land is part of America.

3) And in order to look for where it came together with America.”

Peter ordered fleet captain Vitus Bering to command the expedition; Alexei Chirikov and Martyn Shpanberg were appointed as his assistants.

At the end of January, Tsar Peter died...

So, the question of the expedition was resolved. It entered the history of geographical science under the name of the “First Kamchatka Expedition” and was part of the measures of Peter the Great, which were aimed at strengthening the position of the Russian state in the Pacific Ocean and, in addition, at developing trade with eastern countries.

The expedition set off in early February 1725 - sixty people and a huge convoy, which carried food and materials necessary for building ships.

The path to the shores of the Pacific Ocean was difficult and long. Of the 663 horses, 267 died. There was not enough food, and famine began. “Walking along,” Bering wrote in one of his reports to the Senate, “the whole crew became hungry, and from such hunger they ate dead horse meat, rawhide bags and all sorts of raw leather, leather clothes and shoes.”

Only in July 1727 did the entire expedition gather in Okhotsk. It took another year to deliver cargo to Kamchatka and build the ship. On July 8, 1728, it was launched and given the name “Gabriel.” Soon the ship went to sea. The Gabriel, a twenty-meter vessel built in three months, carried a forty-person crew and a year's supply of food. On July 28, the expedition reached the Anadyr River, beyond which it discovered a bay called Cross Bay. On August 10, the Asian coast turned sharply to the north, and a few days later, when the Gabriel reached 65° north latitude, Bering called the ship's officers to a council. The question had to be resolved: should we sail further?

Two opinions were expressed. Martyn Shpanberg advised going north for three more days and then turning back. Winter is approaching, he said, and the Gabriel could get stuck in the ice. Chirikov had a different opinion. He believed that the goals of the expedition had not been achieved, the strait was not open and that he should sail on. The final decision depended on Bering. After some thought, the head of the expedition took Spanberg’s side.

On August 16, having reached 67°8" northern latitude, "Gabriel" set off on a reverse course. On September 1, the expedition arrived at the mouth of the Kamchatka River, where it spent the winter.

Yes, “Gabriel” walked for six days through the strait, which is now called the Bering Strait. But the head of the expedition did not know this. He also did not know that he was separated from America by some 80 km. If Bering had been more decisive, he would have accepted Chirikov’s proposal, and the question of the existence of a strait between Asia and America would have been clarified in 1728.....
