What could be more wonderful than a fascinating magical fantasy world when you accidentally end up there at the request of a swamp goblin, who comes to you on a dark, wonderful evening and hides a chest with a surprise in the attic.

Touching story of the Magic Land

The history of the game begins with the fact that a long time ago, the world of people and the world of fairies - Zanzara - existed in parallel, and people visited the world of fairies, and fairies visited the world of people. The fairy world was represented by Elves, Swamp Goblins, Dwarves and Pixies. Elves are peaceful inhabitants of the forests and gardens of Zanzara, who are engaged in catching fairies and training them. The swamp goblins first lived in the ice, but then moved to the misty swamps, where they built their village - Dunmore. Dwarves have always lived underground. Their favorite pastime was working with stones and metal, so they built their village - Monagam - underground. Fairies are magical creatures that inhabit all of Zanzaru and live on their own in its secluded corners, sometimes helping its inhabitants.

As time passed, clashes between humans and the inhabitants of Zanzara escalated. People underestimated the fairy world and began to neglect its beauty. Gradually, people began to bring evil to Zanzaru and the Lord of the Kingdom of the Clouds - the White Druid asked the lord of the gnomes - Master Quinlin to create a magical creature that would protect Zanzara from human evil. But as you know, any magic ends sooner or later and the guardian deteriorates, completely closing the portal of the fairy world from the human world. And chaos ensued in Zanzar - the fairies went wild and began to attack the inhabitants of Zanzara, and the Forces of Evil appeared in the magical land - the Elves of Darkness, who placed thorny bushes and huge boulders in the middle of peaceful forests and gardens, thereby instilling fear in the elves and gnomes. Is Zanzara doomed? ,Legends say that in the human world there will be a heroine - an 18-year-old girl who has the courage and courage to put an end to the nightmare that has begun and break the portals hidden many years ago.

The adventure begins!

One quiet evening in Foggy London, a young girl named Emmy was reading a book alone when she quietly heard something as if someone was climbing into the attic. With one eye, Emmy noticed that this unexpected guest was not a person at all - but some kind of small green creature. Running to the attic, Emmy discovered that the mysterious guest had disappeared, leaving a box on the shelf. So it's time to play...

Gameplay

So, the player will have to feel like a hero or heroine and experience unforgettable sensations by being in the role of an 18-year-old girl. Easy controls and a convenient keyboard layout will allow you to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the game.
The gameplay begins with Amy finding a box in the attic, opening it she discovers a rune that takes her to the kingdom of fairies - Zanzaru, where she is met by that same mysterious guest - the swamp goblin Rafi, who invites her to visit the village of the Elves. In the village, our heroine will receive her first companion - a fairy, with whom she will be connected forever. With the help of this fairy, she can move further along Zanzar and her fairy will protect her from wild fairies.
Zanzara is based on fairy fights. To advance through Zanzara, Emmy must win duels with fairies, as well as fights with the elves of darkness that she encounters. In the future, Emmy will have to help the Swamp Goblins, because their village was besieged by the Elves of Darkness, then find the tower of the gnomes, and repair the legendary lift to the kingdom of the clouds, where they prove their courage, and finally go in search of the truth, to answer the question of what really happened with Zanzara

Fairy Breeding Basics

All fairies in the game are divided into 12 elements: nature, air, water, psi, stone, ice, energy, chaos, darkness, light, fire, metal. Each element has its own advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, fairies of different elements inflict damage on each other in different ways. For example, the blows of the water fairy are very effective against the fire fairy, and vice versa are ineffective against the air fairies. The game has an effectiveness table where you can see which fairies are effective against which ones. Fairies fight using spells that are bought from magic merchants. These merchants are located in different parts of Zanzara. There are a total of 120 different spells in the game. Spells are divided into active and passive. Active spells cause damage to the enemy fairy during battle, and passive spells assist the fairy in battle. Spells are also divided into several levels. Each fairy has an individual set of spell casting abilities. Spells can deal varying amounts of damage, depending on its parameters and degree of concentration. The more the spell is concentrated, the more damage it deals. Many spells can deal critical hits - special hits that have an additional negative effect on the enemy fairy.

There are a total of 77 fairies in the game that will delight your eyes with their appearance. These can be beautiful butterflies shining in a lonely sad forest, or winged bear cubs, flying mushrooms, even small dragons. The fairy has its own level of skill. The higher her level, the stronger she is and the more damage she deals with her spell. When a fairy fights, she gains experience, which is necessary to gain a new level. The maximum level in the game is 60. The player needs to train his fairies a lot to make them strong and dexterous.

The most interesting moment for fairies is when they evolve. Upon reaching a certain level, metamorphoses can occur, and the fairy can turn into another fairy, stronger and more developed. Some fairies can be obtained artificially using rare evolutionary stones

To get a fairy, you first need to catch her. To catch a wild fairy, you need to drive it into a fairy catching ball during a fight. Balls can be found while traveling or bought in the village. To catch a fairy up to level 20, you need a silver ball, from 20 to 40 - a gold ball, and for levels 41-60 - a crystal ball

Graphic arts

The world of Zanzara will delight you with amazing landscapes that cannot be seen in reality. The quality of the graphics is quite decent, the small details are clearly drawn. The game has the ability to enable an additional option to display extra particles for grass, trees and flowers. Particular attention should be paid to drawing fairies. A rich palette of colors makes each fairy unique.

Audio

It is impossible not to emphasize the melodic romantic soundtracks from the game, which allow you to immerse yourself in the world of Zanzara. In addition, the game has added environmental sounds: birdsong, wind noise, croaking frogs. Excellent voice acting for the characters. Each fairy has its own irresistible, cheerful voice.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to add about the popularity of this game. Since its release, the game instantly won tens of millions of fans around the world. She is unique in her genre. Many years have passed since its publication, but people still remember it. Sometimes on a cloudy rainy day you want to forget about everything and go back to saving the fairy-tale world called Zanzara!

Nowadays, there are very few people left who have not heard anything at all about Pokemon. Colorful monsters came to the social environment from games, capturing the minds of consumers with their bright and cute designs. Players remember Pokemon for its interesting and unique mechanics of hunting and leveling up wonder animals, which immediately attracted a lot of imitators. Overall, they were all weaker than the Japanese original. However, there is one “clone” that deserves attention.

In 2002, a small German studio Funatics Development released the game Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal. A group of a dozen enthusiasts with a small budget and a publisher, THQ, decided to create a high-quality project for a female audience. The developers' position was that games are mainly made for guys. Bloody shooters, adventures about rescuing princesses. Girls gamers had to either adapt to men’s interests or look for another hobby. Why not make a game just for them? The development plan was chosen, and the gameplay basis was Pokemon, the design and idea of which were changed with an emphasis on European mythology and fairy tales.

The forests are turning green, the sun is shining, a magical caterpillar with a piece of wood instead of a body is flying overhead... An ordinary European fairy tale.

Zanzarah was supposed to occupy a place on the same shelf with Barbie simulators and the next part of the Sims. On paper, it was the ultimate children's product: a game about fairies with bright graphics, aimed primarily at girls. It is important to know this and keep it in mind until the very end of the text in order to fully understand why this game is madly liked not only by the fair half and why “Zanzara” is a unique phenomenon in the gaming industry.

The plot of Zanzarah is naive and simple. It tells the story of an 18-year-old girl, Emmy, living in London. One day, Ruth's goblin appeared in her attic, left a magic rune in an old closet and disappeared. Driven by curiosity, the heroine used her find and was transported to the wonderful world of magic - Zanzaru. According to the laws of fairy tales, Emmy ended up in this dimension for a reason. Fairies, guardians of the wonderful world, went berserk and began to attack local residents. The peoples began to quarrel with each other, simultaneously fighting with the cruel race of dark elves. And the roads between the cities became impassable due to thorn bushes and stone rubble. But there is a prophecy according to which a man will come to the land of magic and sorcery and save everyone. Emmy becomes this “chosen one”.

The small elf village of Endeva is the first settlement the player will encounter on his way.

The game begins with the standard Pokemon intro. In the starting village, the player is told the history of the world, given starting items and three fairies to choose from. With one of them he will begin his journey as a great master collector of magical spirits.

It’s worth dwelling on fairies (or Fairies, as you prefer) in more detail. They are the main theme and central mechanic of the game. The small guardian spirits that inhabit Zanzaru are divided into 12 elements: Nature, Stone, Water, Air, Fire, Psi, Darkness, Light, Metal, Ice, Chaos and Energy. They interact with each other in different ways: water fairies easily defeat fire fairies, but lose to air fairies. The air ones, in turn, are unable to cope with the stone ones. Each of these magical creatures lives in a specific biome. Fairies of nature are in the forest. Stone - in the mountains. Aquatic - in rivers and lakes.

When you press the F1 key in the game, convenient hint menus open. For example, a table of the effectiveness of different elements in battle.

In addition, little magicians are divided into types. The bestiary of fairies is not limited to colorful girls with butterfly wings. The player can have in his collection stone gargoyles, skeletons with wings, fire devils, water monsters, dragons and even real archangels. The miracle army can be either a fabulous cabaret of beautiful sorceresses or a real parade of monsters. In addition, all fairies level up, gain levels and evolve into new species. Each of them differs in combat characteristics and available set of spells. Oh yes, a small note: this is still a simple, childish game for girls.

Aira is an air fairy of the very first level of evolution.
After gaining a couple of dozen levels, she can become a more useful Sirella...
And after many battles, the fairy has a chance to become Laticia - one of the most powerful fairies of the Air element.

The gameplay of Zanzarah is divided into 2 stages. The first is exploring the world. Emmy moves between locations, communicates with characters, solves problems, and also deals with platforming and managing inventory and collections of fairies. The second is battles between fairies. They occur when a wild fairy heroine is attacked or after challenging another collector to a fight.

The battle process itself is made in the style of a shooter in the style of Quake. In a special arena, fairies fight one-on-one. Weapons include combat spells that consume mana for each shot. If it is not there, then health is spent on shooting. Attack cantrips range from the usual “push and shoot” to poisoning, silencing, slowing and arson. In addition, the shells have interesting mechanics. The longer the player holds down the attack button, the stronger the blow. However, if you hold the shot key for too long, it will damage the fairy herself, and not her opponent. And to this whole list it is worth adding that different elements have their own unique spells, and each fairy can have 2 sets of abilities + passive skills.

Player screen during battle. Below are indicators of mana, stamina for flying and health. Above are the remaining enemy fairies.

After fights, your players need to pay close attention. Cure wounds, restore mana, clear periodic effects, and resurrect those killed in battle using healing herbs. Also, babies can be quickly upgraded using golden carrots, renamed with a special named spell, and some species can be turned into new fairies thanks to special artifacts. A little reminder: this is still a children's game for girls.

The tower of the gnomes, in which the mountain people guard the key to the Kingdom of the Clouds.

The design of Zanzarah is difficult to describe in words. He is incredibly handsome, sweet and fabulous. Although the graphics show their age, all the flaws and lack of polygons instantly pale in comparison to the divine work of designers and artists. Zanzara feels like a good fairy tale that has come to life and came out of the pages of an old grandmother’s book. Enchanting forests, majestic mountains, gloomy caves, the fantastic Kingdom of the Clouds, the frightening Kingdom of Darkness, the capital of the elves Tiralin, the dangerous swamps of Dunmore - the game locations are full of color and imagination. Each area has its own music, its own sounds, its own “soul”. And the world itself is made integral - all game points can be easily reached on foot, as soon as the plot allows the player to go to previously inaccessible places.

Each of the peoples of Zanzara has its own unique language. The dialect of the elves is reminiscent of French, and the dialect of the dwarves is similar to German.

The picture, together with the amazing and memorable soundtrack, creates a thick and warm atmosphere of fantasy, magic and pure charm. Transitions between quest locations feel like a real hero's journey. You can’t help but feel like an explorer as you conquer gnome mountains, cross forest thickets and explore long-forgotten temples and caves. The spirit of adventure is literally in the air, permeating every game stone and tree. And yes, it's still a simple game for little girls.

Initially, the spell merchants looked like Watto from Star Wars, but then they were redrawn.

Of course, the game is not perfect. It has its downsides. Some elements did not have enough place in the modest world of Zanzara: the fairies of Energy do not have their own separate location, and the fairies of Light, Darkness and Fire are fully revealed to the player almost at the very end of the game. Of course, if you bother leveling them up, you can get real killing machines with incredible damage and health. However, by the time they are found, the player will already have a collection of developed and cool fairies of the very latest stage of evolution.

Balance is poor. Fairies of Chaos have an incredibly small range of applications, inferior in power to those elements that are most common in Zanzar. Nature, on the contrary, conquers almost everything, unless some problems may arise in battles with the Dark Elves. These people really love to take the antipodes of forest spirits as their striking force.

The Cathedral of the White Druid is one of the most remarkable places in the Kingdom of Clouds.

There are fewer additional activities than expected in open world games. There are a couple of tasks and a global quest to hunt for harmful pixies that bother the residents of Zanzara. I would especially like to highlight the fairy exchanges. Some collectors are willing to trade their miracle spirits in exchange for a specific type. The trouble is that most of the offers are absolutely unprofitable and simply unnecessary. Exchange the maximally pumped up archangel Fatrael for an energy fairy who can be caught in several locations without any problems? No thanks.

There are cute fairies in the game. Zanzarah is old. For a high-quality HD picture you will have to bother with a fan patch, fortunately it takes 2 minutes to search and works without any problems. Besides this, the game is quite simple, because it was made with a view to a younger audience. There is no deep story here: a teenager chosen by someone saves the wizarding world at the behest of the cliches born from the books about Harry Potter. But these shortcomings are a drop in the ocean of the emotions that Zanzarah will give to the player if he gives it a chance. Amazing in quality of execution and unique in terms of gameplay ideas, the game will not let go of connoisseurs of inconspicuous but sincere projects until the very end credits. It’s impossible to express in human language how disappointing it is that Funatics Development went bankrupt after its first work, without even raising funds for an addition to Zanzarah. This was affected by a lousy advertising campaign (in fact, the game was distributed through word of mouth) and the same focus on “little girls”, and not on the entire audience of gamers as a whole. And yet this small, but such a cozy fairy-tale world of Zanzara still lives in the hearts of fans.

The elven capital, Tiralin, features European architecture and a catchy theme song.

For me, and perhaps for many others, New Year's Eve is a reason to feel nostalgic. And today we’re reviewing a game from my deep youth – Zanzarah: the Hidden Portal. The choice seems strange even to me, but today we will talk about this game from back in 2002.

In fact, I bought a CD with “Zanzara” back when it came out. But in those years, technology was developing rapidly, and my PC could not handle these new “cool graphics”. So my first acquaintance with Zanzarah was delayed a little - literally for a year. However, from those distant times, I remembered little about this game. Yes, fairies, and a magical world... The only thing that is clearly etched in my memory is how atmospheric the game was. And my memory has not failed me.

But the hands remember

Yes, I played it a long time ago, but when I decided to repeat it, I realized that it doesn’t take much time to adapt to this game and remember what I forgot. Our main heroine, Amy, is the only representative of the human world in the magical land of fairies, gnomes and elves. The inhabitants of the country called her, because according to predictions, she is the legendary fairy mistress who can save the world of Zanzara from the invasion of dark forces.

The game mechanics combine third-person adventure and FPS (first-person shooter). With the help of Amy, we run around the world of fairies in the Fable style (which will be released much later than this game), and in the event of an attack we are transported to a special arena, where, with the help of our fairies, we take part in battles.

The whole world is divided into small locations, between which we have to move, ridding the world of Zanzara of the evil dark elves. By the way, at first we will only solve riddles, gain experience and catch fairies. Initially, we are given the choice of one fairy from three (nature, water, stone), and all the other fairies can be caught by us during battles in the arena. There are a huge number of fairies here, they are all divided into groups: nature, water, stone, ice, light, air, metal, fire, psi, energy, darkness, chaos.

You can only carry 5 fairies with you, but you can keep an unlimited number of them in your home. In general, the main principle is to collect some kind of invincible set of fairies, since not all fairies are equally effective against others: nature fairies are excellent at dealing with psi-fairies, which in turn are well suited for destroying ice fairies, which leave no chance for fairies nature. And so on in all directions. My ideal combination of only 4 fairies (one place remains free, you can take any): nature, ice, psi, water.

Action

Battles in the arena, as mentioned above, take place with a first-person view. We can summon any of the 5 fairies that are currently in our bag. In the arena, each fairy has several indicators: health, energy reserves, amount of mana for active and passive spells. If everything is clear with health, then we need to clarify a little about other characteristics. The energy reserve affects how long our fairy can stay in the air. This indicator is spent quite quickly, and is replenished only when the fairy is standing on the ground. Spells are divided into active (attacking) and passive. Everyone has their own set of mana. Passive spells can essentially be aimed at protecting or enhancing attack. Add to this the fact that spells are bought from special merchants who sell them to you in random sets, and that, among other things, in battle your fairy can not only be killed, but also, for example, poisoned.

Thus, one of the obvious disadvantages of the game is the overly complicated system of indicators. Poisoning and negative effects that need to be treated after a battle seem redundant - they happen rarely, treatment requires medicine, which there is no point in even buying - it is given in the right quantities as a prize after battles. Spells here are divided not only by passivity and activity, but also by level (from one to three). The higher the level of the fairy, the cooler spells she can use - everything is logical here.

Fairies, as you understand, gain experience after each battle. Not only do they increase in level over time, but they can also change shape. Most fairies have three levels of transformation. And the last level is not always the best - rather, it is more balanced. Fairies have their own indicators, such as health, flight, accuracy. The second level of transformation, for example, may have more health than the third, but other indicators will be less. When the level required for transformation is reached, it can be prohibited, but usually there is no point in this.

Adventure

As for completing various tasks, there are rarely non-plot missions that you don’t have to complete. Basically, completing tasks is linear.

The tasks come down to two things: find something and defeat someone. As you progress through the game, you need to be careful: many of the closed doors you encounter can (and should) be opened later, when you find the right key, fairy card or other artifact. Inattention in this game leads to endless replays of locations. By the way, in the first location (Garden of the Elves) there is an elf who called us: if you don’t know where to go next in the plot, you can ask him - he will tell you with hints.

In general, the game only starts to get boring towards the end. Most of the game time is still captivating what is happening on the screen. In the end, some moments just begin to tire - such as an attack on a team of weak fairies, who die after the first shot, but for some reason still attack a strong team. The most unpleasant thing here is that you cannot avoid the battle (you can escape from it, but only while in the arena). Here, of course, a principle from Heroes 3 like “The enemy is running away, do you want to catch up with him and engage in battle?”

Controlling Amy in 3rd person mode is done quite poorly. When you’re just running along a path, you don’t really feel it, but when you have to jump on some platforms over an abyss, you can immediately feel all the disadvantages - the acrobatics here clearly don’t reach the level of games like “Prince of Persia” or “Lara Croft”. The only plus is that you don’t have to jump very often. Of course, here we can remember that the game was from 2002, when there were no games like Assassin’s Creed yet. But there were games like Heavy Metal, and the already legendary Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released just a year after Zanzarah.

As for locations, there are not many of them. But what cannot be taken away is the variety: flowering gardens, mountain passes, caves, dungeons, a palace in the clouds - you don’t often see this in one game. The locations, of course, do not amaze the imagination with their size, design, or details - but they create the necessary and unique atmosphere of magic, and this is priceless.

Conclusion

To say that this game has no flaws would be wrong. These shortcomings were obvious to everyone back then, and today a couple more have been added to them due to the fact that technology does not stand still. But despite the minor disadvantages, this game has many more advantages: a unique magical atmosphere, a skillful combination of action and adventure, addictive gameplay. And as time has shown, this game gained the main thing - fans. Those who, many years later, launch Zanzaru and enjoy what they cannot find in modern games.

By the way, thanks to fans like these, the game can now get a second life. The project is called Zanzarah by JW and is essentially a transfer to a modern engine (if I’m not mistaken from Skyrim). I recently learned about the project and was pleasantly surprised. You could see screenshots from the original game above, but now look at what can happen if you add a little modernity to the game (images taken from

Report, Hatake-san? (Come, come yaoi!)

I think the key to the perfect fairy combination is the frequency of occurrence of certain types of fairies in the game. The more fairies of a certain type there are, the more necessary it becomes to have an “effective” fairy against them in your five fairies.

Who knows what fairies I would consider effective if I tried to play a chaos fairy or a psi fairy. The latter repelled me with their appearance, but if the question arose about competition at the level of some championship, even a local one, I would think not about beauty, but about efficiency, even if a strong fairy had an ass instead of a face)) Everything for victory !

I can name some really strong and fast fairies:

Bloomella– my favorite because it’s the fastest. She doesn’t evolve, and she doesn’t need it, she’s quite interesting in appearance. Evolves up to level 59. If you equip her with the right spells, she will be irreplaceable. There is a spell that seems to be “Barkskin”, it reflects 5 strong blows from the enemy, if your Bloomella is experienced, then you can defeat a strong opponent without being significantly injured. Well, speed should not be underestimated in general; sometimes during a battle it is not so important to attack as to run away and hide, especially if there are a lot of opponents and the battle looks like gang rape. It is important to sit in some corner and shoot at your opponents until the most resourceful ones begin to pull up to your embrasure, and then look for new cover. The faster the fairy, the more likely it is that it will reach the next corner unharmed.

Laticia. Fairy of the air. Evolves from Aira and Luria. She is more chained in iron than the previous two, and stronger than them. I carried the air fairy for two purposes:
1) jump over air vortices 2) For fights with metal fairies. As a fairy, even at level 60 she's pretty mediocre. Perhaps air just has weak spells.

Swain: She can be caught in the ruins when entering through the pillars. Turnox and Drayan are also often found there. You can also catch her by climbing in and around the ruins. Personally, I didn’t grow it from Drayyan, but caught it ready-made. I really wanted to keep the one that the elf in Tiralin demanded for herself in exchange for something and handed it to you at the end of the vile deal of the spotted freak Segbuz, but there was no other way to complete the quest. The second time I beat the game using cheats. I immediately “conjured” the necessary fairies for myself and trained them from the very beginning. The elf did not accept the enchanted Swain ((She said: “this is some kind of wrong fairy”)))? Although it was the right time to hand over the real Swain - I had already freed her in the Arena and dragged her among my fairies. Swain is quite strong with the right spells. I generally considered her the most powerful fairy of those I played with. She is hardy, moderately fast (not faster than Bloomella) and indispensable in lava caves.

I forgot the name of the Tainrog fairy who evolved into a fire fairy (with the help of a fire stone). In my Tynzard. Fire fairies are not cute, but they are necessary for fights with nature and ice. And since we still had to get to the lava caves, we had to trouble Tynzard. This is some crap on a dragon.

Glasses. I thought for a long time what gender this creature was and calmed down when the word “transvestite” came to mind. But it looks impressive, so I added it to my collection. For beauty.

In addition, there was also Turnox. He is good at fighting the air. In general, I often hung out in the kingdom of clouds, so without it it would have been hard. It would be necessary to defeat the annoying Air and Luria in a fight on equal terms, without “efficiency”. But they simply overcame, the creators stuffed their markers (things that are responsible for a fairy attack from a certain place) into each column.

In general, the power of fairies is the power of their spells. I can mention nature spells (there are many poisonous and protective ones. It is useful to pay attention to the spells used by the terrible mushroom fairies in the Dunmore swamp. There are always a lot of problems with them.), psi spells. In battle, if you use psionic spells, you don’t really see how they affect the enemy, but if they use them on you, you will feel them immediately. You spin around or end up in a random place in the arena. This spell is not very convenient to use - then look for the enemy in the arena, he hid it from himself. Water and light have restoration spells. For light, this spell restores more damage, for water, only 5 points.

Frankly weak spells, and as a result, fairies of stone, they personally did not cause any inconvenience to my fairies. And fairies are as scary as nuclear war.
I used water fairies, but did not fully develop them; they did not quite suit me in terms of strength and dexterity. By the way, I caught the fairy Seramnis on the way in Lucius’s hut (where there is a large curved stream in the garden of the elves. I caught it at the place where the stream flows from (from the rock opposite the entrance and exit from the clearing)). Quite a rare fairy.
Chaos fairies are very annoying, and since the nature fairy was with me from the very beginning, they did not cause me any inconvenience. And the air copes well with them, not to mention Svetlana, as I affectionately called Swain))
