Story

At the beginning of the 20th century, Tobolsk province was one of the territories intensively developing primary education, in which by 1911 there were only 624 primary schools, and the opening of new educational institutions was hampered by a lack of teaching staff.

The decision to open a teachers' seminary in Barnaul with primary school was adopted on May 20, 1915 based on the approval of the state list of income and expenses for 1915.

The “Plan for drawing up a network of teachers’ institutes” also included Novonikolaevsk and Barnaul in the Tomsk province, and within the “extensive” Tobolsk province. The idea of petitioning the government to open a third teachers' institute in Barnaul was put forward by the trustee of the West Siberian educational district, L. I. Lavrentyev.

The Barnaul Teachers' Institute was established on September 1, 1933, and in 1941 it was renamed the Pedagogical Institute.

The first graduation from the Barnaul Teachers' Institute took place in 1935. 17 historians, 22 literary scholars, and 30 physicists and mathematicians graduated from it.

The beginning of 1936 was marked by the graduation of 45 chemistry and biology teachers. By 1947, 720 teachers became full-time graduates of the institute, extramural trained 409 people. To these figures should be added 39 teachers who received higher education at the evening pedagogical institute, the fate of which has already been discussed.

In 1937-39, many employees of the institute were repressed, including director Yuferov, Andrei Petrovich, deputy director Kozyr, Fedosei Sidorovich, etc. Several teachers, fearing arrest, fled from Barnaul - writer Parilov, teacher of military affairs Kurze ( Kurzo). Under the list of those executed, in which the names of Kozyr and Kurzo are indicated, there is the signature of Shapiro I. I. . Those executed were buried on the territory of Barnaul. In 1937, the NKVD authorities arrested the institute's supply manager, former pilot Koshkin. After some time it became clear that the accusations turned out to be false. From the memoirs of a person who went through repression:

One of the methods of influence is “conveyor interrogations”, when they ask for a day, two, three in a row, without a break, only the investigators change. Moreover, you are not sitting, but standing. They put you facing the wall, if you decide to speak or sign, you will say so. How long do you think a person can stand like that? I stood there for three days. Your legs swell, blood vessels begin to burst, you feel blood flowing little by little, in thin streams. But I was cunning: I had wide trousers, so I had the opportunity to shift unnoticed from foot to foot. The first time it lasted up to three days. No food, no water, nothing...
